Central America meets North Africa in Neerpelt

Workshops have long been an integral part of the programme of the European Music Festival for Young People in Neerpelt. This year, at the 67th Edition of the EMJ, there is quite a special workshop. On Saturday, May 4th, from 14h00 to 16h00 in “Zaal den Akker” at WICO Campus Sint-Hubertus, Stationsstraat 25 in Neerpelt, there is a percussion workshop with participation of Two-To-Pan from Mexico and The Five Batucada from Morocco. In other words, Central America meets North Africa at the EMJ in Neerpelt. These two groups provide an oral- and demo workshop. Attentive listeners are 80 other percussionists from Glenwood House School Marimba Squad from South Africa, Grupo Percussao da AMVP from Portugal, Percussion Ensemble Tessenderlo from Belgium and Ober Emmental Percussions Ensemble from Switzerland.

First, the Mexican duo Two-To-Pan bring their steel drums. Along with their teacher Ronald Matthews from Trinidad and Tobago (the cradle of the steel drum) they show the origin and evolution of this specific instrument from the Caribbean. They will then explain their rhythms using a variety of typical instruments and bamboo.

During the second part of this workshop, the percussionists of The Five Batucada from Morocco bring their North African rhythms.

Moderator is Luc Goos, juror for the series “percussion”.
