Categories instrumental

During the next instrumental festivals (2021, 2023, 2025...), you can participate in the following categories: 

All ensembles bring along all other instruments and the musicians' desks. More info about the use of  instruments*.

Category A: Symphonic bands, fanfares, brass bands

Conditions:

  • Maximum age: 28 years. More information about allowed age transgressions can be found in the regulations.
  • Programme free of choice with a duration of 8 - 10 minutes.

Category B: Jazz ensembles and big bands

( Small groups, Big bands, Dixieland Jazz Bands, New Orleans Jazz Bands, ...)

Conditions:

  • Maximum age: 28 year. More information about allowed age transgressions can be found in the regulations.
  • Programme free of choice with a duration of 8 - 10 minutes.

Category C: Percussion ensembles

Conditions:

  • Maximum age: 28 year. More information about allowed age transgressions can be found in the regulations.
  • Programme free of choice with a duration of 8 - 10 minutes.

Category D: Ensembles for chamber music

The occupation of the ensemble must follow next requirements: 
a. Instrumental chamber music, from duo to dixtuor (based on equality, no relationship soloist - accompaniment)
b. Mixed vocal-instrumental ensemble with a maximum of 4 singers (based on equality, no relationship soloist - accompaniment)

  • Programme free of choice with a duration of 8 - 10 minutes.

Category E: Chamber orchestras, string orchestras and symphony orchestras

Conditions:

  • Maximum age: 28 year. More information about allowed age transgressions can be found in the regulations.
  • Programme free of choice with a duration of 8 - 10 minutes.

Category F: Ensembles for free instrumentation, folk music and other instruments

The ensembles participating in this category must consist of at least 10 members. In case the number of members is less than 10, the ensemble must participate in category D, ensembles for chamber music (with an exception for the ensembles for folk music).

  • Programme free of choice with a duration of 8 - 10 minutes.

Category G: Ensembles for ancient music

(i.e. music composed before 1750)

Conditions:

  • Maximum age: 28 year. More information about allowed age transgressions can be found in the regulations.
  • Programme free of choice with a duration of 8 - 10 minutes.

Open Category

Orchestras or choirs that want to participate under the known festival categories but are not able to make a recent recording;

  • Mini-ensembles or small choirs;
  • Soloists (with adult companions);
  • Individual musicians of music academies (recordings of exams…)

We expect a recording with a self-chosen repertoire of 8 to 10 minutes. This recording does not have to be recent but cannot be older than the last physical festival edition. For choirs this is May 2018, for instrumental ensembles and orchestras May 2019. These recordings will not be judged unless specifically requested.
